Night Fever
Although in my youth I remember a fondness for the mantra “Death Before Disco” I guess I’ve softened as I’ve aged. I recently attended an exhibit of 1970’s and 80’s fashion that gave me lots of good vibes. I have to say I’m a bigger fan of it now than I was at the time.
The collection, on view at the Dallas Galleria, was called Night Fever: Fashions from Funk to Disco. We headed down there on a Saturday afternoon near the end of its run. It was mostly clothing, but there were jewelry, shoes, and video clips as well.
Of course I was amused by some of the flamboyant pantsuits and rainbow platform shoes, but what surprised me was how many clothes I saw which I would have been happy to take off the mannequin and wear home.
There were plenty of colorful prints, flares, and global influences to satisfy my bohemian taste:
Pantsuits that were anything but matronly and boring:
Romantic silk chiffon dresses that channeled Greek goddesses:
And the timeless wrap dresses that made Diane Von Furstenburg famous. These were vibrantly colored cotton knits that look absolutely current to this day:
Okay, I probably wouldn’t wear the platform heels with goldfish swimming inside or the bronze medallion bra with fur over-vest… but I gotta admire the nerve of the person who did!
Disco… I’m sorry for all the things I said about you in the past. Now that I think about it, you’re pretty awesome!
