What’s Your “Blank Canvass”
Hi Creatives!
I’m a huge fan of the kind of art labeled by art historians as “Folk Art” “Outsider Art” or “Art Brut”. Whatever the formally educated people like to call it, the common thread in this type of art is that it’s created by people without formal art training.
And I guess what I love most about it is that these people are so driven to create something unique and beautiful and self-expressive that they won’t let anything stop them. No art classes? No money for paint or canvas? That’s okay– they’ll use non-traditional materials; they’ll teach themselves through trial and error and experimentation.
Back in February I got to visit this amazing museum showcasing one man’s vision. And the blank canvas he used to create his life’s work?
Toilet lids.
His collection has recently been moved from his makeshift garage gallery in San Antonio to a bespoke space in The Colony that can be rented out for corporate functions, parties, or receptions. (The Toilet Seat Museum: https://truckyardthecolony.
This guy didn’t let anything keep him from creating. He didn’t have an art degree or expensive sable brushes, but he used his creative gifts to make something delightful.
And what am I doing with my creative gifts? Am I using them? Or making excuses that I don’t have enough money, time, or training? Seeing this place reminded me that everyone can find their own blank canvas– whether it’s a literal canvas or a toilet seat– if they really want to.
So my question is: What’s your blank canvas?
Is it a bag of groceries and an empty skillet? A new document opened up in Word? A batch of cupcakes waiting to be frosted? An inspiring piece of music and an empty dance studio? Whatever your creative gift is, I want to encourage you to get out there and start “painting” your blank canvas!
I’d love for you to hit reply and share what inspires you. What’s your blank canvas?
